Join LaRonda as she compares the journey of Deafhood to a Hero’s Journey. (3:51 mins)
Transcript:
Hello. I just watched Barb Digi’s video where people were interviewed to define the term “Deafhood.” It was cool to watch.
I did notice one thing: Everyone’s responses were different; Very unique and individual. Yet, they also shared a common thread: “Self-love, self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and being proud of oneself as a Deaf person. Very cool.
I think the word “Deafhood” itself is like a calling. It causes people to take notice and ask questions. It makes one explore the concept behind the word. People begin to look at this word more, examine and explore it.
It’s almost like a Hero’s journey. At the beginning, one has The Call. We are compelled to look at what has surfaced in our life and we step back and take it all in…. this “something different” than what we are familiar with.
Then, we begin The Search. We research further and examine our life. During this time of soul searching, people look for meaning as they attempt to make sense of the event, concept or idea.
Next, people begin to do what is in their heart. They may choose to follow someone on the path ahead of them, or further explore the path on their own. Some may begin this journey, or following this concept, only to find themselves choosing a different direction down the road, which is perfectly fine. We are all individual and unique.
As we complete our search, we may begin The Struggle. We may have spats, disagreements, have differences of opinions. Some struggle until they begin to shift the dynamic, or change old patterns until there is finally a breakthrough.
Some people find that once achieving The Breakthrough, it leads them to an even deeper understanding and freedom. Yes, a freedom from old ways toward a new and greater self-awareness and self-acceptance.
Once the breakthrough is complete, the individual comes back to a more integrated sense of self and understanding. This is The Return. I think that some people feel that embarking on, and returning from their journey, helps them better understand their overall experiences. They can then, decide to respond differently to old patterns from the world they live in.
I think the terms “Deafhood” and “A Hero’s Journey” are one in the same. Each starts with a calling, then there is the search. They encounter struggles, and eventually there is a breakthrough. Then finally, there is a return.
It’s a common, universal experience….. and….. it’s all cool.

LaRonda,
This Is Nina. Your comment about Deafhood and Hero’s Journey was very interesting. I have never heard of Hero’s Journey before and did some research on it and it brought some insights about everything in what we all go through. I will need to get the book and read it through. Thank you for sharing this with us. I agree about the positive journey in Deafhood.
Yours,
Nina

Hi LaRonda –
Very good analogy. This makes a lot of sense. I might quibble with some of the minor points, but in general, it does fit.
