In a cohesive effort to encourage the deaf community put aside differences, and work together towards greater unity, Deaf Pundit and Mishka Zena have suggested we each list our personal accomplishments and contributions that we have made to the deaf community. They begin by having us ask ourselves:

“…not what your Deaf Community can do for you;
ask what you can do for your Deaf Community.”

I, LaRonda Zupp, have worked primarily with and for the deaf community for nearly 28 years. I, LaRonda Zupp, could write a book on ways in which I have contributed to the deaf community. One blog post would certainly not do justice.

I, LaRonda Zupp, could list these many accomplishments, wave my professional curriculum vitae, or flash the diplomas, certificates and deaf community awards that cover my wall of fame.

But none of this really matters. What truly matters is that I, LaRonda Zupp, have loved; Loved and accepted myself as a capable, confident and caring deaf individual; Loved and accepted other deaf people for who they are and who they chose to be.

While it has always been my privledge and practice to be a steward of the deaf community, and while I can certainly appreciate the emphasis towards greater unity that is at the crux of this inspired project, to me, it’s not about how much I have contributed or what I have achieved as a deaf individual or professional. Rather, what’s important is how I choose to lead my life as a human being; more specifically: how much my thoughts, words and actions stem from love.

If we lead our lives in the right way, loving, accepting and valuing self and others, the karma will take care of itself. Love will beget love, and good things will come to ourselves and to those whose paths we cross and lives we touch.
