Transcript:

LaRonda: Hello. I’m here at the Bay Area CAD Luau fundraiser for the California Association of the Deaf. Now I’m going to film different part of this event for my vlog today.

Tanja: There’s our Deaf pig! Really, it was cooked for hours and hours and was brought all the way from Hawaii for all of you here. It’s delicious! Look!

(Seniors and friends waving and saying hello. Crowd chatting together while waiting for food…)

Charlene: Our new CAD wants you! Come on!

Jewel: The food looks delicious.

(Seniors waving…)

Woman: We are from Concord. We moved here to California in 1969 and we joined CAD then. We’ve supported it ever since.

Buddy: Thank you, Hi. I’m one of the former presidents of CAD and I’ve always support Deaf rights to life around here. Period!

Bernice: When did you become a CAD member?

Buddy: (mumbling numbers…) I think…

Bernice: I think he’s been a member since 1900! (Mumbling with friend…) We still support CAD. (Shows CAD shirt.) This is my friend…

Friend: I’m just a visitor with buddy and Bernice. I’m not a CAD member.

Bernice: She’s from Salem, Oregon.

Paula: I’m from Berkeley School for the Deaf and I grew up with Buddy and Bernice. It’s nice to see old friends again. ILY

Royal: I’m Royal from Salem, Oregon, one of the best towns int he world!

John: I’m John from Minn. I also came her to visit Buddy and Bernice.

Bernice: Royal and Buddy co-founded Camp Talaoli.

Man: Hi. I’m her other half. I decided to join CAD a long time ago. I acted as the President on the Board of this Northern CA chapter. If we are to survive into the future, we need more new blood to keep this organization going and push us forward into the future!

Dirk: I’ve lived here in Fremont, CA for over 40 years. I’m retired and I’m here to visit my friends. Welcome to CAD.

(Seniors waving hands)

Charlene: Hi. I’m Charlene Mullenix. We’ve all come here to CAD today to support their fundraising efforts. CAD has supported us Deaf people in many, many ways, and Deaf Seniors too.

(Seniors clapping and waving in agreement)

Man: Hi! Sending love to you all and all of my friends!

Evelyn: Hi. I’m Evelyn Ash here at this wonderful CAD Hawaiian themed event. It’s beautiful here and they’ve even got a real pig to eat! Just delicious! It’s wonderful!

Loretta: I’m a new member. I heard about this while at FOG. I moved into FOg about a year and a half ago and I’ve been hearing a lot about CAD ever since. But I’ve been putting off my membership until now. But my friends have forced me to come and so I’ve paid. Ha. I’m now officially a CAD member. I’m glad, and I’ve given CAD another donation as well.

Rose: We moved here last November and we’ve been looking forward to coming here tonight to this Hawaiian luau. We’ve enjoyed it very much. They have delicious food. (John patting tummy in agreement.) Lots of good fruit. We’ve eaten a lot!

John: Yes, it’s good. I’m happy to be here too. It’s wonderful. Thanks. And, yes, right, we are new members of CAD and we’ve made a donation.

Dan: True business! They brought a real life “dead pig!” With pointed ears and hallowed out eyes, and they sawed it open…

Joyce: Dan wanted to eat the pig eyes, but, shucks, they’re gone!

Dan: You know, that pig belongs to Evelyn Ash. She collects many, many, many pigs in her apt. She has them all over. A whole lot of pigs! (Joyce chuckling) This has been the biggest crowd so far. There is over 100 people here. That’s really good for CAD.

Joyce: And we have been members of CAD for many, many, many years. Its countless. We continue to offer our support, because CAD can help Deaf people.

Man: I’m also a member, though not as long as Joyce and Dan, but maybe for about 10 years now. I found out that CAD used to be affiliated with CHAD in the LA area. My mother now lives there. I’m happy we have CAD here.

Rachel: I’ve been a member of CAD for almost 22 years. I was a member when I lived in Southern CA and again here in Northern CA. CAD is wonderful and a good organization for all Deaf people, I encourage all to get motivated…

Evelyn: I’ve been a member of CAD for 40 years! (Seniors waving)

Hank: Hello. We really enjoy being here with everyone. You know, my wife and i have been members of CAD for over 30 years, and we have gone to many different meetings and conferences. We try not to miss anything because we really love our association with the Deaf community here in our area. This is truly our home here with the Deaf. It’s a wonderful night to celebrate together!

Kay: I’m Kay T. You’ve asked me why I’ve joined CAD. I’ll tell you. A long time ago, when I was younger, I was a member for a few years I sort of lost connection. I became more busy with family and work. But now that I’m older, I realize I want to come back. Besides, I know many of our old friends are there now as well. I’ve enjoyed this evening and the wonderful food they’ve provided for us here.

Gary: I feel the same as my wife, here. I have enjoyed this event tonight. Thank you.

Stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3 in the days ahead.

The vlog is very offending to vegetarians. The vlog showed a dead pig. People have no respect for animals.

    Kim,

My sincerest apologies for showing the pig. I did not consider the impact it might have carefully. It was a tremendous part of this Hawaiian themed celebration and they were honoring Hawaiian culture with the roasted pig as their main course. I can certainly understand the reaction. Again, please accept my apology. I iwll try to be more thoughtful in the future.

    LaRonda,

Great job doing this for the Seniors. You do have a wonderful way with people. I love the dress you were wearing.

To the first commenter: I know LaRonda meant no harm to do this to spite to people who are against pigs or whatever. LaRonda be yourself and you do have a big heart to make everyone at ease.

    Namaste,
    Susan

We had a blast night. Pig is our main meal course to celebrate for CAD of Bay Area Chapter Hawaiian style party! I do not think that eating the PIG is to offend anyone especially vegetarians. I have seen a few vegetarians coming along with us. They simply did not eat the PIG. They ate a lot of FRUITS! We have to understand that we are different people in the world but to celebrate Hawaiian style party together. We protect deaf rights as a whole Deaf world. This is what CAD is for.

Thank you LaRonda for a quick vlogging post!! Looking forward for two more vlogs! :)

    Tom

I apreciate this VLOG as it tempts me to keep looking at your site for part 2 and 3 , This Hawaiian theme Luau attracted over 125 people and had a goal to entertain all ages and getting the people together as a unity. The party has great time in a cool breeze of North California where all else is blazing hot this time of year(Summer)
The future gathering looks at various kind of food on the table. This may be ABALONE feast coming Sept., CRAB Feed coming November. Keep looking for these future FRESH food feasts!
Celebrate CAD! The orgin of good times!

Hi… the Bay Area CAD Chapter did a fantastic job putting this party together. I am not a vegetarian, but I could not eat an animal with a head and legs still attached nor bear to watch it get cut up so I stayed a few feet away. There were other food available for us to eat, but the best part of the event was the people! Thank you all for being a part of CAD!

    Nancy

Congrats to the committee!!! We are proud of Ralph, our son!!!!
    JOB WELL-DONE!!!
More new members are coming to CAD!!! We need YOU!!!!
The food was so delicious!!!!! Especially, the roasted pig!! something different!!

The best CAD chapter gathering for a long time! Yes, the Vegetarians has the rights to choose their foods - NOT to tell others what or how to eat. We respect everyone’s choices. We ought to have fun among the deaf community and preserve our rights to have the decent lives at the same time. We want to be the best strongest chapter in the state. Kudos and huge credits go to those fantastic leaders who made this unforgettable night. Thanks

Nice vlog. Nice to see seniors out and enjoying themselves. I wish America respected the elderly more like the way the chinese culture does. They treat their seniors with respect and honor them, here in America…. totally different story lol.
I don’t find the pig thing offensive, the way I see it is everything is eventually recycled and its the process of life. Like when we die and our bodies underground turn into bones and dust, with the casket being underground for so long (unless your family got you a cheap casket), i’m sure a hole or two with start to show and bugs start to come in a eat away at some of your bones, etc and come up to surface and those bugs (worms) are taken away and eaten by birds then along comes some hunter - sees the bird as game and shoots the bird down, he takes it home, cooks and eats it, now a piece of your body is in him. So no, I don’t find it offensive. Its life.

It looks like everyone enjoyed themselves. Kim has a point. I did find the video disgusting with the pig in it. I noticed that the number of vegetarians are increasing. Can we have parties without meat just to respect vegetarians? Just like can we have parties without alcohol to respect muslims or people who try to remain sober. If people have to kill their own animals, many of them wouldn’t. Think Charlotte’s Web!

Yes it was great evening. I want to express that HOVRS heartly sponsored the event. Thank you, HOVRS

Regarding the vegetarian issue over the roasted pig, isn’t there two places you can protest- San Francisco and Berkeley?

As always, LaRonda is graceful in offering apologies, and I hope the vegetarians take it in stride, and the vegetarians can cook up their own feast for the Deaf community, too.

That is one way to speak up.

The Luau was our event, our time, our freedom, this is America. And the vegetarians can create their own freedom by taking the incentive to establish their own feast and invite us to see your perspective, too.

We’re all open minded, aren’t we?

While we exercise our own freedoms, too.

Something to say?
