Hey Everyone!
It’s October 30th, 8:15pm here in Fremont, CA. Just a quick note to let you know that we just had a 5.6 earthquake centered in the San Jose area. My family and I all felt our house bobble up and down. Quite a jolt and it lasted a long time. My husband thought it was cool, but my son and I trembled as we clung onto each other to ride it out.
Right after the quake, we tuned in to the local TV stations and waited for the news announcement. Much to my dismay, there were no live captions!! Grrrr! All the info was translated to me by my hearing husband. It just sucks when there are no captions after such events! What are deaf people supposed to do when they don’t have someone to interpret the news or emergency info?!!!
We are okay and hoping there won’t be any after shocks.
I went to CNN.com to see what they had to say:
“(CNN) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck Northern California Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake’s epicenter was about five miles north-northeast of Alum Rock, California, and nine miles northeast of San Jose’s city hall, the USGS said. It hit at 8:04 p.m. (11:04 p.m. ET).
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The earthquake’s epicenter was 5.7 miles below the Earth’s surface. Earthquakes centered close to the surface produce stronger shaking and generally can cause more damage than those farther underground.
Alum Rock is 50 miles southeast of San Francisco.”
Just wanted to get the word out there.

P.S. A little more information. After the moderate earth rumble, my son and I were looking on internet to find any more details about this recent quake that he might take to school tomorrow to start up a discussion in his class. We learned an interesting thing: There were MANY earthquakes all over the world today (October 30th, 2007), and that it is a common occurrence to have many global quakes on the same day. Here’s just a little of what we found:
10/30/07
San Jose, CA: 8:04pm - 5.6 magnitude
Chiapas, Mexico: 5:46pm - 4.5
Cairo, Egypt: 8:12pm - 4.0
Rat Islands, Aleutian Islands, Alaska: 7:18pm - 3.9
King Country, New Zealand: 9:37pm - 3.5
Alaska Peninsula: 6:37pm - 3.4

Yea, I was at Chili’s Restaurant (Fremont Hub) when it happened. Very light and brief, nothing really (I guess ur area felt it more), but it has been quite a long while I felt a quake. My daughter’s first quake and kinda freaked her out. I was around here when the big one (7.0) hit back in 1989. That was something.

Yes, I was at Richmond BART “Bay Area Rapid Transit” I felt shaking. At first I sensed something funny. Why is the station moving or am I dizzy? Then finally I realized that it is earthquake!! What I felt.. It was like floating. Interested…..

Scary! Doesn’t it make you nervous to live right on or near the San Andrea Fault? They just come with no warning in advance, don’t they?
There was a website I used to look a few years ago and cannot remember the URL but it would tell you where the earthquakes are, little or big, and it looked like there is always a few everyday and many is not large enough to feel much of. I will see if I can find it and send to you.

PS: I’m bothered (too) why the tv wasn’t CC ?? That is not fair!! Something needs to be done - needs to be addressed - incase of emergencies…..

Those times, are they local?
Left by Moebius on October 31st, 2007
Moebius,
I’m not sure if those times for the other quakes were local to those areas or the same around the world. I imagine because of the variety that it would be local to those regions.

I felt the 5.6 earthquake in the 2nd floor of a friend’s apartment. We almost thought it would be one of the bigger ones. My buddy and I started to lay down face down and pray, which was the practical thing to do at the time. Only the Lord is in control of all destiny, so we turned to the Lord. Who else can we turn to when mother earth is practically shaking its’ foundations? Lest we be swallowed up by the earth?

Link for all earthquakes in California…

LaRonda, I agree there should be immediate CC on TV the minute there is an emergency notice/warning of any kind. This reminds me of the the time the space ship exploded just after take off. As I recall you were extremely frightened that the US was being attacked with nuclear weapons or some other horrible things were happening. You had no one to tell you what was going on for some time. I am all for pushing for immediate CC in emergencies. Glad you and family are OK after the quake. As I told you, we felt the shake/jolt here in Fresno. I went to a web site for California Earthquakes and was given a map indicating the exact location and the size only minutes after the quake. Just now I tried to re-connect with that site, and can’t fine it. I’ll keep trying. Love Mom

Is that typical to not have cc? Is there usually a ticker or something to go along with it?

LaRonda,
I’m very glad that you and your family are OK. Sorry you all had such a scary experience.
I know the frustration of seeing no captioning, especially on TV news after a major event has just occurred. The first thing I think about is how am I, my mother and all the deaf people supposed to know what is happening, what to do, etc?
It seems to occur more frequently with weather emergencies and natural disasters and that is a time when EVERYONE should have access to information IMMEDIATELY.
