My Journey Into Deafhood: The Best Medicine ~

One of my favorite visitors in the days to come was my step-sister’s good friend, Terry. She was a tall, big-boned, model-beautiful girl. She had the greatest sense of humor, enviable self-confidence, and the best pair of hands! Terry would come in and make me laugh while she peeled off thin layers of my shredding skin, which was the result of my recent sunburn and the rash that accompanied my illness, Toxic Shock Syndrome.

And so, now that I was in recovery, my visitors came. They came, and they came, and they came. I never knew there were so many people in my life! I was often overwhelmed, but mostly I felt humbled and loved. People came from every corner of my world. Old friends, and new; nuclear family and step; relatives, and friends of relatives, and friends of friends who had been praying and hoping for my full recovery. People whom I didn’t even know came — people sent to me from my relatives places of employment, from my school, and from my friends’ churches.

My Journey Into Deafhood: The Mirror ~

(Ch. 29 of my story of my journey into Deafhood…)

I remember my Grandpa Ransom coming to see me in my recovery room. He asked me if there was anything he could do for me. I was starving for a donut (Geez!), having watched too many Winchell’s commercials from the silent TV in my hospital room, and I practically begged him to smuggle me in one. Grandpa laughed, waved his hand in the air and said, “Sheesh!” He told me he would bring me in something better, which got me all excited. Later, he brought me in a big basket of fruit, which wasn’t what I expected, but was good none-the-less, and I shared it with everyone. He knew what was good for me and I loved him for it.
